Percentage Grade Calculator: Calculate Your Grades and Scores

Calculating your grade percentage helps you understand your academic performance, check your exam results, and track your progress throughout a course. Whether you are working with test marks, assignments, quizzes, or weighted exams, knowing your percentage makes it easier to interpret your results.

The Percentage Grade Calculator lets you calculate your score from marks earned and total possible marks. You can also convert your percentage into a letter grade, calculate weighted course results, and check how far you are from a target score.

How to Calculate Your Grade Percentage

To calculate your grade percentage, divide the marks you earned by the total possible marks and multiply the result by 100.

Grade Percentage Formula:

Percentage = (Marks Earned ÷ Total Possible Marks) × 100

For example, if you earned 84 marks out of 100:

Percentage = (84 ÷ 100) × 100 = 84%

Your grade percentage is 84%. The corresponding letter grade depends on the grading scale used by your school, college, or university.

Percentage Grade Examples

Here are some examples of how marks convert into percentages.

Marks EarnedTotal MarksPercentage
455090%
728090%
8410084%
13515090%
18020090%
22525090%

The same percentage can result from different mark totals. This makes percentages useful for comparing scores across assessments with different maximum marks.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Select Points / marks based to calculate a score from a single test, assignment, or exam.
  2. Enter your marks earned and the total possible marks.
  3. Add any bonus marks, if applicable.
  4. Optionally enter a target percentage or previous score to compare your results.
  5. Choose a standard, plus/minus, or custom grading scale.
  6. Select the number of decimal places and click Calculate grade.

To calculate a course grade, select Weighted course grade. Enter each graded category’s percentage score and its course weight. Ensure that all category weights add up to 100%. Leave the score blank for any category that has not yet been graded.

The calculator displays your percentage, letter grade, target status, and other relevant details.

How Weighted Grades Are Calculated

Some courses assign different weights to assignments, quizzes, midterms, and final exams. In these cases, each category contributes a specific portion of your overall grade.

Weighted Grade Formula:

Weighted Grade = Σ (Category Score × Category Weight) ÷ Σ (Graded Category Weights)

For example, imagine a course with these categories:

CategoryScoreWeight
Assignments88%30%
Quizzes82%20%
Midterm exam75%20%
Final exam90%30%

The calculation is:

(88 × 0.30) + (82 × 0.20) + (75 × 0.20) + (90 × 0.30) = 84.8%

Your weighted course grade is 84.8%.

If some categories are not yet graded, the calculator uses only the graded categories and their combined weights to calculate your current average. This is different from a final course grade, which includes all categories.

Percentage to Letter Grade Conversion

Schools and universities may use different grading systems. The following tables are examples, not universal academic standards.

You can select a custom scale in the calculator if your institution uses different boundaries. Always refer to your institution’s official grading policy for your actual grade.

How to Calculate Marks Needed for a Target Grade

If you know the total marks for an assessment and your current score, you can calculate the difference between your current percentage and a target percentage.

For example, if your test is out of 100 marks, you earned 72 marks, and your target is 85%:

Target marks = 85% × 100 = 85 marks

Difference = 85 − 72 = 13 marks

You are 13 marks below the target score. This calculation shows the difference from your current result; it does not predict how many marks you can still earn on an assessment that has already been completed.

For a weighted course, the score required on a remaining assessment depends on its weight and the course’s grading rules. The weighted mode shows your current average and the difference from your target, rather than assuming a particular future assessment.

Why Tracking Your Grade Percentage Matters

Tracking your grade percentage helps you understand how your scores change across different assessments. It can also help you identify subjects or categories where you may want to focus more study time.

Comparing your current result with a previous percentage can show whether your score has increased or decreased. If your course uses weighted grading, checking category contributions can also help you understand how individual assignments and exams affect your current average.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my grade as a percentage?

Divide your earned marks by the total possible marks and multiply by 100. For example, 36 marks out of 40 gives you 90%.

Is a 75% a good grade?

A 75% falls within the C range in the illustrative standard scale used above. However, grade boundaries and academic expectations vary by institution, course, and country.

Can I calculate my grade if assignments have different weights?

Yes. Select weighted course grade, enter the percentage score and weight for each category, and make sure the category weights add up to 100%.

Can my grade percentage be higher than 100%?

Yes, if your assessment or course allows bonus marks or extra credit. Without bonus marks, the points-based percentage will not exceed 100% when earned marks are limited to the total possible marks.

What is the difference between a percentage and a letter grade?

A percentage is a numerical representation of your score, while a letter grade is a category assigned according to a grading scale. For example, 90% may correspond to an A under one grading scale.

Does this calculator work for college and university grades?

It can calculate points-based and weighted percentages for many school, college, and university assessments. However, it does not calculate GPA, and you should use your institution’s official grading rules when determining a final academic result.

Can I use this calculator for exam results?

Yes. Enter the marks you earned and the total possible marks to calculate your exam percentage. You can also add bonus marks and compare your result with a target.

Note: The calculator provides mathematical estimates based on the marks, weights, and grading boundaries entered. Your official grade may differ if your institution uses additional rules, rounding policies, curves, or other grading methods.
