Calculation Results

Absolute Difference +25.00
Ratio 1.50×
Starting Value 50.00
Final Value 75.00
Percentage Points 25.00
Final Value as % of Start 150.00%

Step-by-Step Calculation

1. Find the difference 75 − 50 = 25
2. Divide by the starting value 25 ÷ 50 = 0.50
3. Convert to a percentage 0.50 × 100 = 50.00%

Quick Examples

Percentage Change Formula

Percentage Change = ((Final Value − Starting Value) ÷ |Starting Value|) × 100

The starting value is the baseline used to measure the relative change. A positive result indicates an increase, while a negative result indicates a decrease.

Enter an original value and a new value to quickly calculate the percentage change between them. The calculator shows whether the value increased or decreased, along with the absolute difference, ratio, percentage points, and step-by-step calculation.

It can be used for changes in prices, sales, revenue, grades, statistics, website traffic, investments, measurements, and everyday calculations.

How to calculate percentage change

The basic calculation compares the difference between the new value and the original value with the original baseline:

Percentage Change = ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ |Original Value|) × 100

For example, if a value changes from 50 to 75:

Percentage increase vs. percentage decrease

A positive result means the new value is higher than the starting value. A negative result means it is lower.

For example:

100 → 125 = 25% increase

100 → 75 = 25% decrease

The calculator automatically identifies the direction.

Percentage change vs percentage points

These are not always the same thing.

Suppose an interest rate changes from 4% to 5%.

The difference is:

5% − 4% = 1 percentage point

But the relative percentage change is:

(5 − 4) ÷ 4 × 100 = 25%

So the rate increased by 1 percentage point, while the relative increase was 25%.

Can percentage change be more than 100%?

Yes. A percentage increase can exceed 100%.

For example, a value changing from 20 to 80 represents a:

300% increase

The new value is four times the original value.

What happens when the starting value is zero?

A conventional percentage-change calculation cannot divide by zero. Therefore, when the original value is zero, the calculator reports the result as undefined instead of displaying an incorrect number.

What is the percentage change from 50 to 75?

It is a 50% increase.

What is the percentage decrease from 100 to 80?

It is a 20% decrease.

Can percentage change be negative?

Yes. A negative result indicates that the final value is lower than the starting value.

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage points?

Percentage change measures the relative change from the original value. Percentage points simply measure the arithmetic difference between two percentages.

Can I calculate an increase of more than 100%?

Yes. There is no fixed upper limit for a percentage increase.

Can I calculate percentage change when the starting value is zero?

No conventional percentage-change result exists because the formula would require division by zero.
