Score progress
This calculator uses a simple points-based grading method. Your institution may use different grade boundaries, weighted assignments or other assessment rules.
How to Calculate Your Test Percentage
Knowing your test percentage helps you understand your performance in an exam, quiz, assignment or classroom assessment. Instead of looking only at the marks you earned, a percentage shows how your score compares with the total marks available.
To calculate your result, divide the marks you earned by the total possible marks and multiply the answer by 100. You can also include bonus marks to calculate an adjusted score.
Test Percentage Formula
The basic formula is:
Test Percentage = (Marks Earned ÷ Total Possible Marks) × 100
For example, if you earned 42 marks out of 50:
- Marks earned: 42
- Total possible marks: 50
- Calculation: (42 ÷ 50) × 100
- Final percentage: 84%
Your test percentage is 84%.
If you earned bonus marks, add them to your earned marks before dividing by the total possible marks. Bonus-mark policies can vary by school or institution, so check whether your assessment allows bonus marks to increase the result above 100%.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter the marks you earned on your test.
- Enter the total possible marks.
- Add any bonus marks, if applicable.
- Select a grading scale to see an estimated letter grade.
- Enter an optional target percentage to find out how many additional marks are required.
- Enter a previous test percentage to compare your results.
- Review your calculated score and copy the results if needed.
The calculator updates automatically when you change the inputs.
How Are Letter Grades Calculated?
Letter grades are assigned according to percentage thresholds. This calculator provides two example scales, but schools and universities may use their own grading systems.
| Percentage | Standard grade |
|---|---|
| 90–100% | A |
| 80–89.99% | B |
| 70–79.99% | C |
| 60–69.99% | D |
| Below 60% | F |
The plus/minus option uses more detailed thresholds, such as A+ at 97% and B+ at 87%. These are illustrative grading boundaries, not universal academic standards. Choose the scale that matches your institution when interpreting the result.
How to Find the Marks Needed for a Target
If you want to reach a particular percentage, you can calculate the marks required using the target percentage and the total possible marks.
Target marks = (Target percentage ÷ 100) × Total possible marks
For example, if your test is out of 80 marks and your target is 90%:
- Target percentage: 90%
- Total possible marks: 80
- Target marks: 72
You need 72 counted marks to reach 90%. If you have already earned 60 marks and have no bonus marks, you need 12 more marks to reach that target, assuming those marks are still available.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a test percentage?
Divide the marks earned by the total possible marks and multiply the result by 100. For example, 36 out of 40 is 90%.
What is 45 out of 50 as a percentage?
Divide 45 by 50 and multiply by 100. The result is 90%.
How do bonus marks affect my percentage?
Bonus marks are added to the marks earned before the percentage is calculated. Depending on your institution’s rules, the final result may be capped at 100% or allowed to exceed it.
Can I calculate my letter grade?
Yes. Select either the standard A–F scale or the plus/minus scale. The calculator will display the corresponding grade based on the selected thresholds.
How many marks do I need to get 80%?
Multiply the total possible marks by 0.80. For a test out of 50, you need 40 marks to achieve 80%.
Can I compare two test scores?
Yes. Enter your previous test percentage in the comparison field. The calculator will show the difference in percentage points between the current result and the previous result.
Does this calculator work for different exams?
Yes. You can use it for school tests, college exams, quizzes, assignments and other assessments that use a straightforward points-based scoring system.
Is test percentage the same as overall course grade?
No. A test percentage represents the result of one assessment. An overall course grade may combine several tests, assignments, projects, participation marks and weighted grading categories.
Note: This tool provides a mathematical calculation and does not replace the grading rules established by your school, college or examination board.
